Alzheimer's Disease, Media Representations and the Politics of Euthanasia PDF
By:Megan-Jane Johnstone
Published on 2016-04-15 by Routledge

Drawing on extensive data including news media reports and commentaries, documentaries, courts and court reports, films, websites, professional literature and government and non-government agencies, this book explores the 'Alzheimerisation' of the euthanasia debate, examining the shift in recent years in public attitudes towards the desirability and moral permissibility of euthanasia as an end-of-life 'solution' for people living with the disease - not just at its end stage, but also at earlier stages. With attention to media representations and public understandings of Alzheimer's disease, Alzheimer's Disease, Media Representations and the Politics of Euthanasia sheds light on the processes contributing to these changes in public opinion, investigating the drivers of vexed political debate surrounding the issue and examining the manner in which both sides of the euthanasia debate mobilise support, portray their opponents and make use of media technologies to frame the terms of discourse. Paving the way for a greater level of intellectual honesty with regard to an issue carrying significant policy implications, this book will be of interest to scholars of media and communication, social movements and political communication, and the sociology of health and medicine, as well as researchers and professionals in the fields of palliative and end of life care.

The Price of Compassion PDF
By:Michael Stingl
Published on 2010-05-12 by Broadview Press

This important book includes a compelling selection of original essays on euthanasia and associated legislative and health care issues, together with important background material for understanding and assessing the arguments of these essays. The book explores a central strand in the debate over medically assisted death, the so called |slippery slope| argument. The focus of the book is on one particularly important aspect of the downward slope of this argument: hastening the death of those individuals who appear to be suffering greatly from their medical condition but are unable to request that we do anything about that suffering because of their diminished mental capacities. Slippery slope concerns have been raised in many countries, including Britain, the Netherlands, Canada, and the United States. This book concentrates most of its attention on the latter two countries. Stingl divides the book into four parts. Part I lays out the relevant public policies in the form of legal judgments, making them the philosophical point of departure for readers. Part II discusses the ever-present slippery slope objection to assisted suicide and other forms of euthanasia. Parts III and IV examine the role of social factors and political structures in determining the morality and legalization of voluntary and non-voluntary euthanasia. These sections are especially valuable. The inclusion of a selection of papers on the relationship between the morality and legality of euthanasia and systems of health care delivery is of particular interest, especially to those who want to make statistical, legal and moral comparisons between the USA and Canada.

Reconceiving the Second Sex PDF

Published on 2009 by Berghahn Books

Extensive social science research, particularly by anthropologists, has explored womens reproductive lives, their use of reproductive technologies, and their experiences as mothers and nurturers of children. Meanwhile, few if any volumes have explored mens reproductive concerns or contributions to womens reproductive health: Men are clearly viewed as the second sex in reproduction. This volume argues that the marginalization of men is an oversight of considerable proportions, and thereby seeks to break the silence surrounding mens thoughts, experiences, and feelings about their reproductive lives. It sheds new light on male reproduction from a cross-cultural, global perspective, focusing not only upon men in Europe and America but also those in the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. Both heterosexual and homosexual, married and unmarried men are featured in this volume, which assesses concerns ranging from masculinity and sexuality to childbirth and fatherhood. Thus, men are brought back into the equation, as reproductive partners, progenitors, fathers, nurturers, and decision-makers.

The revised, updated Fifth Edition of this pocket book is a handy reference to consult when making bedside interpretations of clinical data. Remarkably complete for its small size, the book lists nearly 200 symptoms, physical signs, laboratory test results, and radiologic findings and their differential diagnoses. This edition has a new, more user-friendly two-color design, tabs indicating sections, and shortened lists of the most common diagnoses. An expanded section on HIV infection covers new manifestations, including immune reconstitution syndrome. The infectious disease chapter has been revised to reflect its increasing importance in clinical medicine, the emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria, and the threat of bioterrorism.

Freud PDF
By:Jonathan Lear
Published on 2005-10-09 by Routledge

Jonathan Lear clearly introduces and assesses all of Freud's thought, focusing on those areas of philosophy on which Freud is acknowledged to have had a lasting impact. These include the philosophy of mind, free will and determinism, rationality, the nature of the self and subjectivity, and ethics and religion. He also considers some of the deeper issues and problems Freud engaged with, brilliantly illustrating their philosophical significance: human sexuality, the unconscious, dreams, and the theory of transference. Freud is one of the most important introductions and contributions to understanding this great thinker to have been published for many years, and will be essential reading for anyone in the humanities, social sciences and beyond with an interest in Freud or philosophy.

Published on 1987-02 by Mit Pr

This book of readings offers compelling evidence that even in this age of advanced medical technology and large-scale bureaucracy, the essence of diagnosis, therapy, and management of illness continues to reside in the doctor-patient relationship. It brings together 17 articles published from 1927 to 1978 dealing with the sociological and cultural aspects of clinical and bedside medicine. The articles are grouped into five parts. These cover the ground rules for the doctor-patient relationship, the dynamics of the interchange, the nature of the communication, barriers to communication, case studies, and visions of what the ideal relationship might be. The editor has added an extensive introduction that situates the articles and reviews in the current state of research in the field. Authors included are Emily M. Ahern, Arlene K. Daniels, Milton S. Davis, Sherman Eisenthal, Joan P. Emerson, Vida Francis, Arlene Frank, Eliot Freidson, L. J. Henderson, Marc H. Hollender, Arthur Kleinman, Barbara M. Korsch, Aaron Lazare, John B. McKinlay, Marie J. Asthma PDF
By:MD Richard F. Lockey,MD Dennis K. Ledford
Published on 2014-02-21 by Oxford University Press

Asthma sufferers number approximately 200 million worldwide, with 15-20 million of those in the United States. Multiple comorbid conditions occur with asthma, including rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, sleep apnea, vocal cord dysfunction syndrome, obesity, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Without identifying and caring for comorbid conditions, asthma cannot be treated appropriately. Comorbidity of allergic diseases emphasizes that we must understand more about why different organs in individuals express allergy and others do not. The increase in multiple allergies occurring in a single patient makes the global burden even more complex, and an integrated approach to diagnosis and new treatment strategies and preventative approaches are required. Asthma: Comorbidities, Coexisting Conditions, and Differential Diagnosis is the first volume to provide a centralized, a comprehensive clinical reference on the diagnosis and management of the comorbid conditions that affect asthma. Because comorbid conditions of asthma have not yet been included in international and national management guidelines, this volume will help fill a gap in current clinical knowledge, aiding physicians in delivering optimal patient care. Written and published in conjunction with the World Allergy Organization (WAO), this book consists of the latest research and reviews of current theory and practice, the most effective advances in the diagnosis and management of asthma and its co-morbidities, and insights into the fundamentals of asthma and its co-morbidities. It presents scientifically-based medicine for each comorbid condition as it relates to asthma.

Published on 2016-02-25 by The Resistance

The infamous Illuminati secret society represents the pinnacle of power in politics, banking, and the news media; but what about the entertainment industry? Do Hollywood’s elite studios, producers, and celebrities have a secret agenda? Are they part of a covert conspiracy? Media analyst Mark Dice will show you exactly how Hollywood uses celebrities and entertainment as a powerful propaganda tool to shape our culture, attitudes, behaviors, and to promote corrupt government policies and programs. You will see how the CIA and the Pentagon work hand in hand with Hollywood to produce blockbuster movies and popular television shows crafted to paint positive portraits of war, Orwellian government surveillance, unconstitutional agendas, and more. You’ll also learn the strange and secret spiritual beliefs of the stars that fuel their egos and appetites for fame and wealth, making them perfect puppets for the corporate controllers behind the scenes. And you will also discover the rare instances of anti-Illuminati celebrities who have dared to bite the hand that feeds them. Character Howard Beale once warned in the 1976 classic film Network, “This tube is the most awesome God-damned force in the whole godless world, and woe is us if it ever falls in to the hands of the wrong people,” and unfortunately that is exactly what has happened.

The Story of Pain PDF
By:Joanna Bourke
Published on 2014-06-26 by OUP Oxford

Everyone knows what is feels like to be in pain. Scraped knees, toothaches, migraines, giving birth, cancer, heart attacks, and heartaches: pain permeates our entire lives. We also witness other people - loved ones - suffering, and we 'feel with' them. It is easy to assume this is the end of the story: 'pain-is-pain-is-pain', and that is all there is to say. But it is not. In fact, the way in which people respond to what they describe as 'painful' has changed considerably over time. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, for example, people believed that pain served a specific (and positive) function - it was a message from God or Nature; it would perfect the spirit. 'Suffer in this life and you wouldn't suffer in the next one'. Submission to pain was required. Nothing could be more removed from twentieth and twenty-first century understandings, where pain is regarded as an unremitting evil to be 'fought'. Focusing on the English-speaking world, this book tells the story of pain since the eighteenth century, addressing fundamental questions about the experience and nature of suffering over the last three centuries. How have those in pain interpreted their suffering - and how have these interpretations changed over time? How have people learnt to conduct themselves when suffering? How do friends and family react? And what about medical professionals: should they immerse themselves in the suffering person or is the best response a kind of professional detachment? As Joanna Bourke shows in this fascinating investigation, people have come up with many different answers to these questions over time. And a history of pain can tell us a great deal about how we might respond to our own suffering in the present - and, just as importantly, to the suffering of those around us.

The original essays collected here under the general title of The Knowledge Society were first commissioned for a conference held in the late fall of 1984 at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, West Germany. The conference in Darmstadt saw a larger number of contribu tions presented than could be accommodated in this edition of the Sociol ogy of the Sciences Yearbook. However, all contributions were important and affected those published in this collection. We are therefore grateful to all participants of the Darmstadt conference for their presentations and for their intense, useful as well as thoughtful discussion of all papers. Those chosen for publication in the Yearbook and those undoubtedly to be published elsewhere have all benefitted considerably from our discussions in Darmstadt which also included a number of the members of the edito rial board of the Yearbook. In addition, we are pleased that the authors were able to read and comment further on each other's papers prior to publication. As is the case in every endeavor of this kind, we have incurred many debts and are only able to acknowledge these at this point publicly while expressing our sincere thanks and appreciation for all the intellectual sup port and the considerable labor invested by a number of persons in the realization of the collection.
